World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025
  • Dates: November 18-24, 2025
  • Theme: "Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future"

World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW), observed globally from November 18–24, is a crucial initiative to increase global understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public, health workers, and policymakers to slow the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) and the International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy are among the many organizations providing useful resources and coordinating events for this important week.

The Global Challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when germs (like bacteria and fungi) change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. It's a great concern globally.

Poor practices, such as the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in human and animal health, along with inadequate infection prevention and control (IPC), all contribute to the spread of AMR.

AMR: A Global Concern
One Health

AMR is tackled using a One Health approach, recognizing that the health of people, animals, and the environment are interconnected.

Events during the week focus on strategies to tackle AMR across human, animal, and environmental health, as seen in webinars for regions like Africa, Asia, and MENA.

Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and IPC practices is essential to protect our present and secure our future.
