It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of one of the pioneers of IPNET-Kenya Albert Wamukota Bunyasi Msc, IFBA. He was the Founder and executive director at Africa Management consultancy Ltd. Highly accomplished Biomedical scientist with great experience in biosafety, biosecurity and medical laboratory medicine. He was one of the pioneers of IPNET-Kenya and in 2013 during the 3rd IPNET-Kenya conference in Mombasa he gave a talk on “State of Biosafety, Biosecurity in Kenya laboratories” an area IPNET-Kenya has been focusing on. He worked with the MOH-Kenya for over 35 years as the head of biosafety and biosecurity and provided leadership in the establishment of ISO 15189 certified national HIV Reference Laboratory, development of the Kenya's national biosafety guidelines, standard operating procedures for biosafety & biosecurity, Biosafety curriculum among many other Natitional documents. Prior to his demise, Albert was a lecturer at Masinde Muliro University of of Science and Technology, where he was the brain behind the development of the Biosafety & Biosecurity (BAC Degree Program) . He also served as the IFBA representative for East Africa and team lead of the Biorisk Reduction in Low Environment (BEP) project. He was the first individual in Kenya to receive the IFBA’s Professional Certification in Biorisk Management. Mr. Bunyasi also provides technical assistance to Kenya’s National Police Service in the Disaster Management’s Department of Biosecurity. Mr Bunyasi will be missed by his colleagues and friends, his great professional accomplishment in the area of Biosafety and Biosecurity, and infection prevention and control.
Most certainly, all who knew and interacted with Albert are better people because of him.
